7 Signs Your Gutters Need Cleaning Right Now

Gutters don't send a warning text before they fail. They just quietly fill up until the next hard rain finds every weak spot. The good news: your gutters usually give you signs long before real damage happens — you just have to know what to look for.

Here are the seven signals we tell Toledo homeowners to watch for. If you're seeing even one of these, it's time for a cleaning.

1. Water Spilling Over the Side During Rain

This is the most obvious sign, and the most common. If you watch your gutters during a rainstorm and see water sheeting over the edge instead of running through the downspout, something is blocking the channel. It doesn't take a full clog — even a partial blockage is enough to send water pouring down your siding and against your foundation.

2. Plants or Weeds Growing in the Gutter

If you can see actual seedlings, grass, or small weeds sprouting out of your gutter from the ground, that's not a small problem — it means there's enough decomposed leaf matter and trapped soil up there to support plant life. At that point the gutter isn't draining at all in that section.

3. Sagging or Pulling-Away Sections

Gutters are hung on brackets that are only rated for the weight of the gutter itself, not gutters plus pounds of soaked leaves and debris. When you see a section sagging, pulling away from the fascia, or visibly bowed, the extra weight of trapped debris is usually the cause. Left alone, this leads to torn-off gutters, not just a cleaning job.

4. Stains or Streaking on Your Siding

Dark streaks running down your siding beneath the gutter line are a sign that water has been overflowing there repeatedly — often for a while before you noticed. By the time the staining shows up, that section has likely been overflowing through multiple rain events.

5. Mildew, Mold, or a Musty Smell Near the Foundation

Clogged gutters dump water right next to your foundation instead of routing it away. If you notice a musty smell in your basement, or mildew starting on foundation walls, backed-up gutters are one of the first things worth checking — especially after a wet stretch of Toledo weather.

6. Sagging Ceiling or Water Stains After a Storm

This one is more serious: if you see a water stain on a ceiling or ice buildup at the roofline after a winter storm, an overflowing or ice-dammed gutter is often the source. Water backing up at the roof edge can work its way under shingles and into the house.

7. You Genuinely Can't Remember Your Last Cleaning
