Your Toledo Spring Home Exterior Checklist

Toledo winters are hard on the outside of a home. Between road salt, freeze-thaw cycles, and months of neglected upkeep, spring is when all of it becomes visible at once. Here's the exterior checklist we walk Toledo homeowners through every year — the parts that matter most, in the order that makes sense.

1. Clear Winter Debris from the Gutters First

Start here, because gutters affect everything downstream — literally. Winter wind and ice knock loose whatever fall leaves didn't already fill your gutters with, and freeze-thaw cycles can loosen hangers and seams. Clear the debris, flush the downspouts, and check that water is actually draining away from the foundation before spring rains arrive.

2. Wash Away Winter's Film from Your Windows

Road salt spray, winter grime, and months of closed windows leave a dull film on glass that's easy to stop noticing. Spring is the natural reset point — a full interior and exterior window cleaning removes the buildup and lets in noticeably more light right when Toledo's days are getting longer.

3. Check Downspouts and Grading

While you're looking at gutters, follow the downspouts down to where they discharge. Make sure extensions are still attached (winter ice and snow shifting off the roof commonly knocks them loose) and that water is directed at least several feet away from the foundation, not pooling right against it.

4. Inspect for Loose or Damaged Gutter Hardware

Toledo's 40-plus freeze-thaw cycles each winter put real stress on gutter hangers and seams. A spring walk-around — or having a professional check while cleaning — catches a loose bracket or separating seam while it's a five-minute fix, not a fallen gutter section.

5. Look at Fascia and Soffit for Winter Moisture Damage

If gutters overflowed or ice dams formed anywhere over the winter, the fascia board behind that section is worth a look. Soft, discolored, or peeling wood is a sign moisture got in — better to catch it in spring than let it sit through another wet season.

6. Clean Window Screens Before Pollen Season Peaks

Toledo's oak, maple, and cottonwood pollen ramps up through April and May. Screens that are already dusty from winter trap even more of it, which then blows back onto freshly cleaned glass. Cleaning screens early in spring keeps that cycle from starting.
